No Health Insurance A Concern For NFL Players After Lockout

Nearly two weeks into a lockout imposed by National Football League owners, the players of the NFL are concerned about not having health insurance.

Speaking at their annual convention last Thursday, former NFL Players Association President Kevin Mawae - the NFLPA dissolved, allowing individual players to sue the league - told the Associated Press that his biggest concern was younger players "who … may not have the ability to pay COBRA over a long term." COBRA is a group health insurance plan large organizations often use to insure their employees.

Players and owners are locked in a dispute over how to split up $9 billion in revenue the NFL receives each year. Players want to split the earnings 50-50, but the owners want a bigger share, as well as a number of player concessions, such as a rookie wage scale and an extended regular season.

The dispute is headed for the courtroom, as the Associated Press reports a hearing has been scheduled for April 6. Lawyers for the players will argue, among other things, that the league cannot lock the players out.
